A traditional Roofing System. Built up roof is a term for a roof system that is built by adding layers. It is the oldest of the newer methods dating back to the early 1800’s. All systems use either base, ply (15lb felt or fiberglass) or cap sheets in a combination. They are installed using different waterproofing materials such as coal tar pitch, asphalt, cold application adhesive, and modified asphalt. The final step is a variety of surfacing options using gravel or mineral surface material for UV protectant.
Built Up roofing limits movement with high tensal strength. There is nothing quite like ashphalt to make a roof water resistant.
